Note III. Report on Seven Samples of Thames Mud, five taken by Mr. Radcliffe near the outfalls of the Main Sewers and two by myself near Westminster. Appearances.—All the samples were of brownish colour on the surface where exposed to the action of the air, and dark, or even black, in the interior. All of them consisted, in greater part, of silicious particles or sand, more or less fine, mixed with calcareous matter, clay, oxide or sulphide of iron, particles of wood, straw, and other vegetable fibre, cinders, coals, &c., &c. Microscopic Appearance.—Under the microscope all the samples showed, in addition to the above, a variety of fungoid growths, broken down organic tissue, hairs, vegetable fibres, diatomaceae, &c., &c. The general character of all was thus exactly alike, although slight differences could be perceived between them.
