    and Terapralo?. He seeks for the origin of the quartan in black bile, remarks that it is much longer than the tertian, and that the age most subject to it is from the twenty-fifth to the forty-fifth year.1 He does not say any- thing about the ages subject to quotidians and tertians, and he does not say that young people were not attacked by quartans. On the other hand, Hippocrates does say that children were attacked by mperol, and many of these, at least, must have been malaria. The inferences which it seems fair to draw are as follows : (1) The districts which fell under the obser- vation of the Hippocratic school were infected with malaria. Either they were not subject to it so as to be, in the words of Sir Patrick Manson, “highly infected,” or, more probably, they had but recently been overrun by the disease. (2) If this be so, Galen’s criticism of Plato referred to in the last section may mean that Attica had become infected even more recently.
