In the preparation of this Edition, I have consulted a very scattered literature, but would particularly mention Dr. Fream’s Edition of Youatt’s 4 Complete Grazier,’ which is a store-house of information, and has afforded me many valuable references to original papers. I am indebted to Mr. F. B. Smith, Director of Agri- culture, Transvaal, for permission to utilize the excellent Library of that Department, which has given me an oppor- tunity of consulting in the original many valuable papers in the Royal Agricultural and Highland and Agricultural Societies’ publications. The work of reading the final proofs of this book has been very kindly undertaken by Major Butler, A.Y.D. Owing to my absence abroad, this has been both time- saving and of immense service, and I beg to offer him my best thanks.
