The first production by which Tansillo distinguished himself was a poem in ottava rima, which injured his inorai character as much as it increased his reputation for ta- lents and for wit. Perhaps no part of mo- dern Europe has retained thè customs of thè ancients with so little variation as thè king- dom of Naples, and particolariy thè provin- ces of Appulia and Calabria, where thè most singular, and even obscene ceremonies are yet continued ; thè object in honour of whom they are performed being only changed from a beathen deity, to a mo- dera saint.
