No text description is available for this image![foloweth the right devoute moche lowable & recommendable: Lyff of the Olde Auncyent Faders, Hermytes, late trans- lated out of latyn in to Frenshe, and dylygently corrected. in the Cyte of Lyon, by the blessyd & holy Saynt Jerome, & other solytarye relygyouse persones after hym, and after in the yereof our Lorde M.CCCC.LXXXXI (1491), reduced in to Englyshe (Colophon at end) Thus Endyth the moost: vertuouse Historye of the Devoute & Right Renowned Lyves of Holy Faders Lyvynge in Deserte, worthy of remembraunce to all well dysposed persones, whiche hath be translated out of Frensshe into Englysshe by Wyllyam Caxton, of Westmynstre, late deed, and fynysshed it at the laste daye of his lyfe, black letter, large \woodcut of St. Jerome preaching, this is repeated on the last leaf, and also at the beginning of each of the five parts of the volume, and a great quantity of smaller woodcuts throughout, THOUGHT TO BE THE WORK OF AN ENGLISH ARTIST, the title in facsimile, the lower margins of some leaves repaired, and the last two leaves inlaid, OTHERWISE AN EXCELLENT Copy in brown calf, with blind stamped ornaments to an old pattern by W. PRATT, g. e. Emprinted in the sayd towne of Westmynstre be my Wynkyn de Worde, the yere of Our Lorde MOCCOLXXXXV [1495] and the tenth yere of our Soverayne Lorde Kyng Henry the Seventh. From the Inglis collection; exceedingly rare, and con- sidered one of the finest productions from Wynkyn de Worde’s press. This copy contains title and dedication, 2 leaves [the Civil Wars], 97 numbered leaves, 1 blank leaf, Musophilus, 18 leaves, only.
