    During the past year we were compelled, owing to the closing of top floor wards, to reduce the number of patients admitted to the Maternity Department to little more than two-thirds of the previous year’s number. In spite of the reduction, no genuine emergency has been refused and, so far as I can ascertain, no one has suffered seriously as the result of premature discharge. The table which follows gives a classification under disease groups of the patients who were discharged from hospital during the year.
