    CENSUS, 1881. The Superintendent Registrars have kindly furnished returns of the Census taken on the night of April 3rd, 1881, which are exclusive of returns sent direct to the Registrar-General. The increase of the population in the decade is 55,244, raising the total population within the Municipality to 548,649. If to this be added the increase of three months (which will give the number used in calculating the death rate), the population at the middle of the year will be 550,110, whilst the estimated population was 549,834. Inhabited houses have increased 13,896 since the Census of 1871, and the average number of persons per house is 5-9 against 6*3 in 1871, and 6*7 in 1861. The increase of population and houses has taken place in the Out Townships, the Parish or Old Borough having decreased from 238,411 to 207,132, and inhabited houses from 34,293 to 31,678. The number of dwelling-houses erected during the ten years has been 18,653, and pulled down 2,927, giving an increase of dwellings of 15,736, Uninhabited houses have increased from 8,532 in 1871 to 10,381; and there are also many houses, which are now used only for business purposes, of which there are no record. Ihe number of deaths in the ten years—1871 to 1880—was 147,605; whilst m the ten previous years—1861 to 1870—there were 156,205, being a decrease of 8,600 deaths, notwithstanding the increase of population, reducing the death rate from the previous decade 33* per 1000 persons living to 28 *5 per 1000 for the present. This decrease has been progressive, and is satisfac¬ tory evidence of the improved health of the people. The death-rate for the five years—1871 to 1875—was 29’5, and from 1876 to 1880, 27-5. The appended table shows a very satisfactory decrease in the number of deaths from zymotic diseases, and of children under five years of age.
