PREFACE. 'T^HE Nature and Caufes of Dropfies, have been inveftigated at large, and the Indications of Cure clearly laid down, by many eniinent Writers; in particular by Boerhaaye, Hoffman, and Cullen, in their general Syftems of Pradice; and by Monro, Wilks, and Others, in Effays profeffedly written upon the Subjed. But the Indication of the moji Importance, that of evacu ating the Waters by the Ufe of Medi- cines, has in general, been attended with the great^ft Difhculty. Diaphoretics, Sudorifics, and Siala- gogues, have very feldom produced the dchred Effed Emetics and Purga- tives,
