    HOUSING Undoubtedly housing was the predominant feature of the department's activities during 1955» The Central Government have given the green light for Local Authorities to go ahead and prepare their slum clearance plans and all authorities were requested to submit their proposals to the Ministry. In order to formulate a programme it was necessary to carry out a survey of the housing accommodation in the district and this occupied a considerable proportion of your inspectors' time during the first half of the year. As a result of this survey 200 houses were considered to be unfit for habitation and suitable for demolition. The policy for rehousing people from these areas had not been decided by the end of the year and consequently no new clearance areas were declared. It was found during the survey that many houses in terraces which would normally be included in slum clearance schemes have been bought by the occupiers and reconditioned. They are to all intents and purposes fit houses yet are sandwiched between unfit houses. These will cause many problems when these areas are considered for action. Confirmation of the Hulton Ward Clearance Areas No. 18 (School Street and Johnson Street) was received during the year. 296 unfit houses were made fit as a result of notices from the department. It was only necessary for the Council to carry out work in default of the owner in one instance. Seven certificates of disrepair were issued during the year and one certificate was revoked.
