    In this edition the original purpose of the book has been con- stantly in mind—the presentation in concise and illustrated form of efficient methods of treating the common fractures of bone. The wisdom of operating upon certain fractures is considered at some length in this edition. A few operative procedures have been described. New illustrations and new X-rays have been added. Important recent papers are recorded in the Bibliog- raphy. The remote results following trauma to the head are considered. Especial attention has been directed to obstetrical skull frac- tures of the newborn, to fractures of the zygoma, of the malar bone, of the superior maxilla, of the head and neck of the radius, of the neck of the femur, and of the carpal scaphoid; to unre- duced dislocations of the elbow, to acromioclavicular disloca- tions, to pathological fractures, to old fractures of the radius, and to Volkmann's contracture. A most important problem for solution is the successful treat- ment of ununited fractures. Too great emphasis cannot be laid upon the necessity for re- peated and frequent inspection of a fracture after it has appar- ently been reduced. The condition of the fractured part is too frequently taken for granted, with often disastrous and distressing results. Charles L. Scudder. 189 Beacon Street, Boston.
