Corneal epithelium with desquamating cell

Transmission electron micrograph of the epithelial surface of the peripheral cornea. These epithelial cells have very few organelles apart from nuclei. They adhere to each other via numerous desmosomes - the black spots along the interfaces between cells. The cell at the top of the picture is breaking these contacts with the cells below it and is about to slough off. This cell is approximately 33 microns long and has a dark pyknotic nucleus.
