The singer Madame Cornelys was known for her lavish musical gatherings in Carlisle House, on the east side of Soho Square in London, which were often attended by high society. "Signor G-dag-ni" is the castrato singer Cosimo Gaetano Guadagni, who also performed at Carlisle House

On the back wall are three framed paintings: on the left, Cimon and Pero; in the centre, a marine painting; and on the right a version of Jupiter and Io by Correggio
