![OTHER FOOD COMPLAINTS (Continued) Tvri]d Strawberry Sweets A complaint was received of a bitter taste particularly from the outer coating of the sweets. A sample submitted for bacteriological and chemical examination showed that there was no bacterial contamination and that they were free from metal contamination and the colouring matter was on the permitted list. Salmon Sandwiches A complaint was received of crystals, which the complainant thought v/as glass in the salmon part of the sandwich. On examination the cystals were found to be magnesium ammonium phosphate which are occasionally found in tinned fish. The crystals dissolve in the stomach and are perfectly harmless. Potato Puffs A complaint of children being sick after eating these puffs bought from the school canteen was investigated but after chemical and bacteriological examination nothing was found to cause the symptoms described. Sterilised Milk An opened bottle of sterilised milk containing what appeared to be a piece of dark coloured milk skin was brought to the office. The producers from outside the Borough were notified and they agreed it y/as milk skin which had not been properly rinsed from the bottle before refilling. As the bottle had been opened it was decided to give a warning. Beef and Four Vegetables /in opened tin of beef and four vegetables was brought into the Department and on examination was found to contain a % square of beef hide with hair attached. The product was produced outside the Borough. The Manufacturers and Retailers were notified and the Managing Director came to the Department to examine the tin. The Public Health Committee decided to give a warning. PROSECUTIONS FOR CONTRAVENTIONS OF FOOD HYGIENE (GENERAL) REGULATIONS, 1 9&> A small cafe in the town was inspected and was found to be in a filthy state in spite of several warnings, and the following conditions were found:- Yard Sink v/aste gully obstructed with paper and filth. Yard surface littered with paper and food scraps. Galvanised metal cake trays stored on yard surface, and with adhering food scraps. Kitchen Kitchen floor holding dirty water and littered with food scraps, broken glass, paper and out-door shoes. Bread bin contained large quantity of mouldy sliced bread. Six dirty tea towels in dirty frying pan on floor. One sink contained potato peelings .and dirt. The other sink contained soil - (presumably from potatoes), and several cups and saucers. Shelf below table in a filthy condition with scraps of old food adhering to it and a packet of crumbled cheese in corner and also cracked and broken eggs. T/ooden floor between kitchen and service bar broken and dirty. Floor behind service bar wet, littered with cigarette ends, match sticks and three cases of empty mineral water bottles with a pair of ladies shoes on top and also bits of scrap paper. Refrigerator behind service bar contained decomposing minced meat, unwrapped bacon and sausages and v/as dirty. The gas cooker top v/as caked in grease and charred food scraps.
