The ragged aguador, or water-carrier, near the bottom of the social order in 18th and 19th century Mexico City, was essential to its life. Only a few rich private households and religious institutions had their own sources. Most water had to be drawn from the public fountains supplied by aqueduct from the surrounding mountains; during epidemics this paid service was more than usually vital and often at risk.
