Hugh Childers and W.E. Gladstone are cheering the horses on, but Harcourt has lost hope and urges Gladstone to leave. Of the three horses, one is ridden by Joseph Chamberlain as a jockey with "Irish land trans[fer]" on his silk, a second jockey wears a silk inscribed "Irish Catholic university", and a third jockey has no inscription
