    commands us, to do good to all Men, even our Enemies, much more to thofe of the fame Faith with ourfelves, and to our neceftitous Brethren. Our Saviour lays fo great a Strefs upon this Duty of Charity to the diftrefted Poor, as that with¬ out fome Degree of it, we cannot be of the Number of his true Difciples, or have any Title to the Promiles of the Gofpel. Thirdly, Plow it comes to pafs, that the giv¬ ing Gifts, is tire Means to procure the Efteem and Friendfhip of the World. As to thofe that do partake of them, ftnce all Men are naturally averfe to Pain, and Sick- nefs, and Want, and think Health the moft invaluable Bleffing of Life, they mull needs highly efteem. fuch as contribute to remove from them the one, and reftore them to the other. As to the Lookers-on, all Men with one Confent acknowledge Charity to be a Virtue truly amiable, relembling neareft that divine Perfection, by which God takes moft delight to make himlelf known to the Children of Mien, his Goodnefs. For this is not a Virtue like fome others, difowned in one Place, applauded in another j condemned in one Age, recommend¬ ed in another ; but is, and always has been ac¬ knowledged by all People as truly excellent $ which may appear from this ftngle Conlidera- tion.
