HE customs necessitated by operative procedures in days preceding aseptic sur- gery and carried out by the pioneers in early modern surgical work still have a marked influence in many spheres upon the operator. Not only is conservatism in progress the rule among us but through lack of proper facilities for experimentation and time for thoughtful consideration of the ever broadening and rapidly changing problems in our profession, many there are who have found it advisable to continue with methods that have stood the test of time even though they have had dis- agreeable sequelze with perchance an accom- panying though small mortality.
