School Name Date In response to more than one hundred circulai-s of ques- tions issued, 43 re})lies in all—one from the I’niversity of Oxford—have been received. The disparity is largely to lx* accounted for by the fact that many of our members are attached as Medical Officers to Schools in which all or most of the pupils are day scholars, and to similar causes. Small as is the total number of replies, they may l)e taken as representative ; covering, as they do. Schools varying in social class, in numbers ranging from 24 to nearly 1,<X)0 pupils, of ages vaiying from 4 years to 19J ; and the several returns cover periods of from 2 to 37 years—the averagt* being 18*2 years. The 41 schools tabulated contain, on the average, in each year 10,519 scholars altogether ; the number of pupils multiplied by the number of years coveivd by the st'veral obsc*rvers totals 203,385—which may be expressed as the total number of annual ])upil-ob.s<.‘rvations included in the whole return. If we assume that each of the pupils remained at school for t) yeans- a far too liberal estimaU*—then it will be (|uite .safe to say that the returns altogether include obser- vations of fully 33,894 separaP* individual pupils, extending over an average of more than 18 years. As regards the Ciises of illness recorded, I slK)uld say at
