![lu Tables VI. aud VII. are shewn the number of deaths, at different ages and from various causes, in each of the nine registration districts, and the death-rates per 1,000 of the population. From them we see that the death-rate was highest in Sheffield West and North, and lowest in Upper Ilallam and Ecclesall. The death-rates in Sheffield West and North in 1892 were 24T6 and 27’65 respectively, aud the increase last year is accounted for partly by the deaths from diarrhcea under five years of age, and partly by a general increase in deaths from various causes at the age periods above 60. INFANTILE DEATHS. During last year 2,238 infants under one year of age died, while under five years of age the deaths recorded were 3,348 out of the total of 7,419 at all ages. This appalling mortality amongst young children is no doubt largely preventible, occurring chiefly in children of the poorest class, and being due to exposure, deficient and unsuitable nourishment, aud, to a certain extent, insanitary surroundings. Taking the deaths under one year of age we find in Table VIII. that the chief causes of death at this period are diarrhoea, diseases of the nervous system—that is to say, the too frequently given and often inaccurate cause of death, “convulsions,”—respiratory affections, and “ other causes,” the latter consisting chiefly of “ debility ” aud “ inanition.” During last year 193 infants under 1 year of age died to every 1,000 births, and during the previous five years the corresponding figures have been in 1888 ... ... ... ... ... 179 1889 ... .. .. ... . 170 1890 . . ... ... ... ... 195 1891 ... ... ... .. ... 170 1892- ... ... ... .. ... 167 TABLE IX.—o/ the Deaths which occurred duriwj the year 1S93, amony Illeyitimate Children under the aye of five years.
