H,S — — Absent On the 26th July, 1948, the Port of London Authority took a sample of the effluent which was examined on the 27th July, 1948. It was found unsatisfactory due to al))uminoid ammonia and impurity figures being more than 0.70 and 70. re- spectively, the ])resence of liaS and its offensive odour. The condition of this effluent was due to cesspool emptying vehicles discharging their contents into the sewer. Closet Accommodation. 4 Closets were conveided from conservancy to water carriage systems during the year. At the end of the year the accommodation was as follows:— W.C.ts discharging into drainage .system ... ... ... 7,711 W.C.’s discharging into cesspools ... ... ... ... 2,139 Dwellings provided with privies, etc. ... ... ... ... 195 Dwellings provided with pail closets ... ... ... ■■■ 80 Total ... 10,125 The oecuiiants of dwellings with pail closets have to empty these themselves. Rivers and Streams. No cases of pollution occurred. Swimmling Baths and Pools. There were two privately owned pools open to the public, one at West Kings- down and the other at Woodlands Holiday Camp. The AVest Kingsdown pool is chlorinated by mechanical means. Water sent from the latter for bacteriological analysis gave a satisfactory result. Smoke Abatement. The inquiries of the Investigation Committee on dust from cement works continued. Schools.
