    PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. [Published in the Year 1844.] The Author of the following pages has. devoted, for many years, his particular attention to complaints of the lungs and heart, and the practicability of producing healthy changes on diseased structures of those organs, by the inhalation of vapours, containing the active or curative principles of medi- cinal substances. During the period referred to, tbe Author noted down in his Case Book the results of this mode of treatment; and, in the course of his readings from time to time, added, from various sources, the opinions and experience of other practitioners, who adopted a somewhat similar treat- ment, These scattered facts and observations he has now revised and collected in the present Treatise, with the hope of directing more general attention to this simple and efficient remedial agent, which has been so unaccountably overlooked by a great majority of his professional brethren. As it is probable that the work, from the interest and importance of the diseases on which it treats, will be perused by many non-medical persons—for anything calculated to throw a ray of light on their treatment, or the hope of arrest- a 2
