Arising from his bed, he is clothed after one manner as he cometh forth to be seen and return¬ ing back to his chamber, after he hath dined he changeth his garments, and when he cometh forth again to supper, he taketh another, and returning back again the fourth, which he weareth until he go to bed ; and once taken into the wardrobe, they are filed up on heaps, and not like to see the face of man any more.” “ Martyr proceeds to say that Montezuma occasionally made presents of these garments to his friends and distinguished soldiers, and it deserves to be remarked, that frequent change of raiment, and presents ol apparel, as a mark of favour from the king’s hand, are mentioned in more places than one in scripture. Esther vi. 10. The eating meat at the king's table, and receiv¬ ing dishes of provision sent from him, was also looked upon by the Jews as a great distinction. It is therefore recorded in the twenty-fifth chapter of second Kings, that Jehoiachin king of Judah, when in captivity, was treated generously by Evil-Merodach, king of Babylon, who spake kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were
