![r n ] r the whole body, the major part of whom are men of reading, of a general knowledge of fcience, and an honour to fociety. Had the dire dors of this medical inftitution confulted the public good, more than their private emolument, they might have found objeCis for excrcifing their benevo¬ lence where it was really wanted, without inter¬ fering where it was both unnecelfary and improper ; and thefe I fhall endeavour to point out. The people I mean, labour under difficulties much greater than are generally imagined ; and their patience under buffering makes them lefs confpicuous than mo ft other ranks, though none are more deferving of protection. They have known better days, and confequently feel with keener fenfibility, the reverfe of their condition : their reluCtance in complaining often reduces them very low in health and fpirits, before they can venture to apply for relief, and thereby difeafe is accumulated upon want. Thefe conflitute the lower part of the middle clafs of people.
