    plainly hence follows whether in Motion, or at Reft, they can only touch in Points, whence their Coha;rence would not be the greater on Account of their being at Reft; which how- ev^er is infinitely greater in Ice than in Water. —Moreover Water is moft difficultly frozen, if ever, in Vacuo^ where there is certainly fuffi- cient Reft, and yet the very fame Water poured off in Contaft with the freezing Air freezes in a Moment, nay even whilft it is pouring off, as the moft diligent Fahrenheit hath obferved, Philofoph. Tranfafl. No. 382. — Something therefore is neceifary from the Air to effect Congelation. Their Opinion therefore Teems more proba- ble, who affert the Caufe of Congelation to be fome frigorific Spiculse admitted from without, which, though they may not remove the aque- ous Sphserulas much the one from the other, increafe the Quantity of Contaft between both, and of Courfe their mutual Coh^fion. Per- haps there is no other Hypothefis, that will explain the remarkable Expanfion of Water when it is frozen which Expanfion of Water however, turned into Ice, happens to it whe- ther the Water was before devoid of Air, or not. But, inafmuch as we are obliged to ufe fome Kind of faline Body in producing all Sorts of artificial Congelations, it is not abfurd to fup- C 2 pole
