Tenders were accepted during the year for the provision of bathroonsand drainage to 4 houses at Hadleigh Road, Nedging-wath-Naughton and to 8 houses at Hall Road, Brent Elei^* The latter improvements will also require the construction of a new sewage disposal TiTorks* Electricity became available to 4 houses at Highlands Road, Monks E].eigh and a tender was accepted for wiring these dwellings. During the year earth closets were converted to water closets at the follov^ring Council houses 4 houses at The Street, Whatfield. 2 houses at Powney Street, Milden. 2 houses at Rands Road, Layham. (b) Discretionaery Imiorovemeiit Grants. The Council encouraged the submission of applications for improvement grants as in past yeai’s. Grants amounting to £10,434 were approved in respect of 35 dwellings* Since the inception of improvement grants in 1949 the Council have authorised grants amounting to £46,239 in respect of 191 dwellings. (c) Standard Improvement Grants* These grants were introduced in June 1959 and already by the end of the year the Council had authorised the making of standard im- provement grants in respect of 34 dwellings, amounting to £4,665« Assistance to bring dvrellings up to modem standards has therefore been authorised in a total of 225 cases which represents nearly 1% of the total houses in the Rural District. (d) Loans. The Council approved loans under the provisions of the Small Dwellings /u)quisition Act and the Housing Act to enable persons to purchase houses for their own occupation. Loans vrere also advanced to enable dwelling to be improved and repaired* Loans v/ere authorised in a total of IO cases (Bildeston 1; Kersey 1; Hitcham 1 j Lindsey 2; Lavonham 3; Polstead 1 and Vilhatfield 1)* (e) Subsidies.
