It will be found in its moft perfect ftate at the end of feven years, and after that age, if it has been carefully cultivated and fkiifully cured* This I aft operation mu ft be conducted in the following manner. As foon as a Root, weighing from three or lour to feventy pounds, is dug up, let it be wafhed till it is thoroughly clean. Let the fibrous roots be taken away, and not the fmalleft particle of bark left on the large ones. Let thefe*be cut into fquare pieces, as nearly as tiiey will admit, of four inches m breadth, and one and a half in depth. i Let a hole be made in the middle of each, about half an inch fquare. Then let them be ftrung upon a packthread, with a knot on each, and at fuch a diftance from one another, as to keep them from rubbing or entangling.
