The assets of hospital properties and equipment represents the value of an appraisal by the Equitable Appraisal Company as at May 23, 1925, plus addi¬ tions from that date to December 31, 1942, at cost. Additions subsequent to the latter date, down to December 31, 1948, have been charged to expense, as have been certain additions of equipment during the year 1949. Within the year 1949, the hospital adopted a program of rehabilitation and modernization of the hospital’s buildings, building appurtenances and certain major departmental equipment, to cost $400,000.00. During the year 1949 there was expended on this project the sum of $206,314.67. Because these expenditures are so extraordinary in amount, in the interest of presenting statements of operations in a manner that would more accu¬ rately reflect the operations of each year, the procedure has been adopted of charg¬ ing to expense the expenditures under this program at the rate of $40,000.00 per annum. Accordingly, said amount has been charged to expense in the year 1949, and the balance of $166,314.67 of such expenditures in the year 1949 is carried forward on the Balance Sheet as deferred expenses, to be written off in subsequent years.
