    WARDS OF THE BOROUGH. The following table gives the population of the fifteen wards of the Borough, the increase in each since the previous Census, the area of each ward, and the number of persons to the acre in each. The density of the population varies greatly in the different wards, the lowest being the new Cosham ward, with nearly two acres to three people, and the most densely populated is St. Mary’s Ward, with 137 persons per acre. The average number of persons per acre for the whole Borough is 31.0 ; if, however, the Coshani Ward be excluded, the density of the population for the remainder of the Borough is found to be 40.0 persons per acre. The total civil and military population of Portsmouth for the middle of 1923 is estimated by the Registrar General to be 252,300 ; the birth-rate is based upon this figure, but the death-rates and sickness rates are all based upon the civil population, which is estimated at 230,718, The total population for 1922 was 249,700, of which the civilian population was estimated to be 236,630. It will be seen therefore that although the total population for 1923 shows an increase of 2,600, there has actually been a decrease in the civil population of 5,912, and that the increased total
