About this work

Description

In the centre, Saint Bartholomew of Grottaferrata uses spectacles to examine a ground plan of the church. Left foreground, a man and a boy smooth a building stone, while another man cuts a stone with a hammer and chisel. A boy with the second man points to the middle distance where a horse or donkey, overloaded with building materials, has collapsed and is being beaten by its master. Right, three men move a stone bas-relief on rollers. Background, various building operations, including raising buckets on a windlass, laying masonry, and raising a column. The rope attached to the top of the column has broken, but the column's fall is stayed by a miracle
