'I'he total number of pupils submitted for routine medical examinations was 9,627 and among these were found 728 defects needing treatment and 2,468 defects requiring further observation. Tn addition to these routine ins])ections, 3,606 special examina- tions and re-examinations were carried out. As a result of these examinations 387 defects were found which required some form of medical treatment and 48 defects were noted for which only observation was necessary. The total nuinher of routine and special medical examinations was 13,233; this is an increase of 4,278 examinations on the previous year. WORK OF THE SCHOOL NURSES The school nurses carry out regular cleanliness surveys in the schools and pay follow-up visits to children in their own homes in addition to assisting with routine and special medical inspections.
