![be installed, and (b) That the water be treated to prevent incrustation in mains and necessity tor scraping. ^^o decision was made in regard to filtration. During’ the year 5,000 lineal yards of water mains were laid in the Borough. 1 am indebted to Mr. Handel Kay, Borough Water Engineer, tor the following note on Workington’s new Keservoir. The scheme tor the provision of a high level water supply commenced at the end of 1947 has made good progress, and the reservoir itself has been j^ractically completed. A considerable quantity of steel and iron pipes have been delivered for the purpose of the mains. Contracts have been let for the laying of the mains, the purchase of pumping equipment and the building of a pump house. Two 105 h.p. pumps have been delivered and are awaiting installation. The scheme comprises the construction of a reinforced concrete service reservoir at Winscales, at a level of 455 feet above sea level, which will be filled wdth water brought down to Stainburn Keservoir by gravity and pumped through an 18in. diameter steel rising main to the new reservoir. Water from the reservoir will be brought through a 12in. distribution main from TYins- cales to the town to serve the higher areas. The construction should be completed during 1950, and will ensure, wKen brought into operation, that every ])art of the Borough will be given a water supply at adequate pressure. It is hoped that at some early date all houses will have covered refuse bins, instead of using a variety of containers such as boxes, buckets, etc. A few years ago a bi-weekly collection of refuse in certain parts of the town was cut down to a weekly collection.
