H. for Edward Dod, 1646. #21 Formerly belonging to George Daniel (1616-1657), the Cavelier poet, with his signature repeated nine times throughout the volume, the first dated 1646. There are numerous marginal notes in his handwriting throughout. Inserted between the License Leaf and the title is an original poem by Daniel, also in his autograph, extending to 22 lines, entitled ‘‘ To the Reader of these following Enquiries; “ Pseudodoxia Epidemica,” dated Decemb. 11th, 1648, and signed ““* * * * * E; * * * * * T:” above a small coat-of-arms. The poem commences :— “If to delight, & profit, be of praise; Admire this Author; who hath many waies Oblig’d the world, in either; would you see Error unvail’d, by a strict scrutinie? Would you know probably, the Causes hid Of manie things in nature; such as (bred Upon the pillow of Coniecture) were Strangelie imposed, by inquisition clear.” Etc. [568] [CAREY (Henry)].
