    UNTER DEN LINDEN 16. KATALOG 1. Among the INCUNABULA 1s introduced a Passio domint by Biel (No. 323) although it was first published in 1509. Accor- ding to the researches of Mr. Helbing the earltest Guten- berg type was used in tts printing. Together with the Hy pneroto- machta of Poltphtlus of 1499 (No. 331), »the Capo @opra de la xylographie vénitiennes, an unknown German Luctan, Strass- burg about 1470 (No.350) an unknown Erfurt print from the year 1486 (No. 3323), a very scarce edition of the Doctrinale of Grosse, Strassburg 1478 (No. 339), a beautiful copy of the first edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493 (No. 369), a proof leaf of Fohannes Schonsperver of the year 1493 about (No. 372) and last not least the Speygelder Dogede(No. 373), which was printed in Lubeck tn 1485, may be also mentioned here. There 1s also to be found a particularly fine collection of CATHOLIC and PROTESTANT CATECHISMS. They are eloquent witnesses of the early religious teachings for the young. Only two of the sixty valuable works which are included in this section: are mentioned here, first — a broadside — a school chart in folto from 1495 (No. 413) which 1s printed in a large red and black type in containing, the articles of faith for children: The Paternoster, the Ten Commandments-the Ave Maria etc. From this chart the children were instructed in the fundamental laws of their fatth. There ts only one similar chart of the same pertod which appears to have been handed down to the present time. There ts further a latin translation of Luthers Small Catechism from 1529 (No. 438) a thick volume im 12” of which there ts only one other copy in existence, which copy ts now in Wolfenbuttel. To this section also belongs »Atn betbuchletn« by Luther published 1523 (No. 704), which ts only to be found in the Hamburg Library. On account of its illustrations tt has been placed tn the section of »THE WORK OF HANS WEIDITZ«. Closely allied to these monuments of early religious teaching for the young 1s a song book from the year 1524. — »for the use and profit of the Young« which was one of the first used in the new protestant church (No. 462). It 1s natural that only a few copies of such works have been preserved, the above work containing only 14 pages. Being daily used by children they were soon destroyed.
