    The whole surplus revenue derived from the West House, witli the exception of the proportion of it arising from the boards of in¬ termediate patients, has been applied towards the reduction of debt affecting the West House. The amount derived from intermediate class boards has, as formerly, been added to the accumulated amount of surplus income, accruing since 31st December 1884, on the boards of private patients. At the Annual Meeting of the Corporation held on 27th Febru¬ ary 1888, the board payable for paupers was, upon the recommen¬ dation of the Managers, reduced from <£33, 10s. to £32, 10s. From a statement prepared by the Treasurer, it appears that the cost per head under every branch of expenditure for pauper patients during the past year was £30, 19s. 5Jd., being £1, 7s. lid. less than in the year preceding, and the Managers beg leave to recommend that the rate of board for paupers be now reduced to £31,—the board of private patients at the lowest rate, for whom clothing is not provided by the Asylum, being reduced to £28, 10s. The diminished cost of maintenance during the past year is mainly attributable to the reduced expenditure under the head of furnish¬ ings and repairs, a fluctuating item which in the year 1887 was somewhat above the average, necessitating, as it may do again, a higher rate of board than might have otherwise been sufficient. The cost of maintenance per head of intermediate patients dur¬ ing the past year was £40, 6s. 8d., while the rate of board for non-privileged patients was £45. The Managers are of opinion that this rate might with propriety be reduced to £42, that of privi¬ leged intermediates being reduced from £40 to £37. The surplus revenue from the East House, amounting to £3189, 3s. lid., has, like the amount derived from the intermediate patients, been added to previous accumulations, now amount¬ ing in all to £17,141, 15s. Id. The above surplus would have been larger for the past year had it not been found necessary to refund to the West House the sum of £292, 18s. 3d. erroneously credited to the East House during the three previous years. The Managers further, during last year, made a contribution of £400 to the funds of the Charity Committee, being £200 more than the customary grant.
