Generally speaking there seems to be a slight decline in the Birth Rate and this is noticeable over the last twelve years. This is not of local significance as this trend is obvious in the country as a whole. It is interesting to speculate on the factors which lead to this falling birth rate, and there must be many, but perhaps our present social system has not brought the security that was anticipated. The Birth Rate for England and Wales was 15° 5 per 1,000 population. In the district 3o7^ of live births were illegitimate.
