![ON SPINA BIFIDA. Hydrorachis,^ Spinola,t and Spina Bifida are names which have been applied to a disease situated in any portion of the spinal column, from the atlas to the coccyx, characterized by one or more fluid tumors, arising from an incomplete ossification of the spinal canal, and attended generally with some paralysis,of the sphincters and lower extremities. Some authors, and in paiticular M. Itard,]: have objected to denomi¬ nating this affection Spina Bifida, and prefer the term Hydrorachis, as conveying a more accurate idea of the disease; but as this term merely means dropsy of the spinal column, without signifying any solu¬ tion of continuity of the osseous texture, I have adopted the term Spina Bifida, which, in my opinion, * Sauvage, Nosolog.
