    Having attentively reflected upon all the preceding observations, I at length ventured to draw the following conclu¬ sion; which being granted, I might flat¬ ter myself that I had already made no inconsiderable proficiency in attaining the real object of my pursuit: that, as it may be justly inferred that similar or equal motions will always, under like circumstances, be produced by similar or equal forces, so it may be conjec¬ tured, THAT THE EFFECT WILL BE the same, caeteris paribus, whether A BOARD BE IMPELLED AGAINST A BODY OF STILL WATER, OR WHETHER THE WATER BE MADE TO FLOW A- GAINST A BOARD AT REST.
