    the world, the results of a century's growth are cer- tainly gratifying. In pausing at the first great halt- ing place, to look back through one hundred years, the eye sweeps over a period of unbroken prosperity, unmarred by disputes or factions. In spite of the va- rious waves of delusion or pseudo-science which have passed over the community during that period, the society has maintained an unbroken front, and has always rallied round the flag of truth and integrity. Its attitude has been the only one which a truly scien- tific body could take. It has been the champion of perfect liberty of action to all, but has withheld the hand of fellowship from those who would deny this boon to others, or would seek to enchain science with the manacles of theory or deceit. The veterans to whom much of this credit is due are passing away, and younger heads and hands are coming forward. In behalf of the latter, I would say that we assume the trust with a full sense of its re- sponsibility, encouraged by the hope that the century which now opens before us may be as full of harmony and prosperity for our society as the one which has passed away.
