    manufacture an unwieldy and inaccurate popular name. To return to our subject. This fly is larger than Musca domestica but so remarkably similar to it in general colouration that it is easily mistaken for a large house-fly. I have usually found it in houses together with the Lesser house-fly in the early summer before the house-fly appears in large numbers. It breeds on all kinds of decaying vegetable substances and also feeds on growing vegetables. The larvae have also been found in excrement and in the remains of rotting insects. The habits of this insect, which resemble to some extent those of the house-fly, make it of some economic importance. Further, its larvae have been found to occur in the human intestine. There are a number of other species of flies found more or less frequently as visitants in human habita¬ tions and for an account of these the reader is referred to the more comprehensive works on this subject. 4—2
