    ther there was congénital affection of the heart, or the organs of respiration, nor did I know how to act ; deceived by the blue colour, I did not dare to bleed, fearing lest the contaminated and venons blood migbt be poured forth with subséquent col- lapse, wberefore I endeavoured to subdue the dropsy by digitalis, crem. tart. solub., and other similar diuretics, and after a few days she died ; I attentively opened the dead body, believing that there was some disease of the heart ; but I was exceedingly surprised to find the heart al toge ther natural, except perhaps a slight enlargement of the right ventricle ; neither was the foramen ovale open, nor did the ductus Botalli, nor the insertion of the vessels, présent any thing particular ; but ail the vessels, particularly the veins, were turgid with dark venons blood ; the lungs did not collapse, and rather exhibited a red colour, as if turgid with san- guineous congestion ; therefore, vainly sèeking for the cause of this disease, I dissected the trachea, when I found the internai mucous membrane a line in thickness, and intensely red ; this inflammation was dispersed through the whok of the bronchi. I now perceived the évident nature of the disease, and the error which I had committed was so fixed in my recollection, that, afterwards, I recognised the fallacious malady at first sight.
