Init tlie piii mater sliowed throughout the highest de- gree of vascularity; the deposition avas entirely con- fined to the space between the membranes, for no ves- tige of it could be traced either on the outer surface of the arachnoid or the inner surface of the pia mater. There was no serous elfusion, and the brain and the cerebellum were perfectly healthy; the bowels were in many places irregularly distended with flatus. § III.—Meningitis of very s.viall extent, avith SEVERE symptoms. Case XII.—A child aged G years, 24th January, 1822, had severe headach and some vomiting, folloived by ex- treme obstinacy of the bowels, ivhich resisted the most active medicines for six days. During this time, she complained constantly of headach, and the vomiting recurred from time to time, but xvas not severe, the pulse varying from 90 to 100. General and topical bleeding, xvith the most active purgatives and injec- tions, had been employed witli every possible assiduity by Dr. Hay. On the 6th day, the bowels began to yield, and about the 10th, there ivas a remarkable im- jnovement of all the symptoms, pulse from 80 to 90, and the headach nearly gone. This favourable state continued for two days; the headach then returned, and on the following day, the 13th of the disease, con- siderable hesitation of speech ’.vas observed, with slight delirium occurring at intervals. On the 14th, she was in these respects better, hut still complained of headach, which ivas referred to the forehead; pupils dilated; pulse frequent. On the 15th, slight convulsion was remarked several times througli the day, and tlie pniii of the forehead w'as still complained of. On the Kith, she M-as in the morning distinct and intelligent, but still complained of headach ; pulse 120.
