    Reader, If in perusing these memoranda you have taken an interest in them, permit me to observe that, doubtless, some of the facts I have stated as chemical will be contested by abler persons than myself. As to the other theories, I have deduced them as well as I could; as I said m the dedication, I have followed up the subject—leaving the con- clusions to arise from the evidence itself, moreover my motive in committing to paper these views, has not been to write a reo^ular work, but to brino- forward certain facts and arguments which, when read and reflected on, would much simplify any discussions and conversations on the subjects treated of. ^]
