    Standards of lighting in selling areas varied from 16-34- lumens but in stock-rooms in no case exceeded 8 lumens with a lowest reading of 2 lumens. It would therefore appear that some statutory minimum standard should be prescribed for parts of shop premises other than selling areas. -o-o-o- Some progress has been made with the operation of the above Act during the year and statistical information is given in the accompanying Tables. The Act has brought to the Public Health Inspector one entirely new side to his multifarious duties i.e. the investigation of accidents and infringement of safety regulations in shops analogous to the provisions which have been applicable to factories and enforced by H.M. Factory Inspectorate for many years. No major accidents have been brought to my notice during the year but it should be borne in mind that only accidents in which some injury occurs are reported and therefore there is not much evidence as to the actual number of accidents which do occur.
