    acid with the water, and dissolve the mercury in the mixture with the aid of a gentle heat. Melt the lard with the oil, and while the mixture is hot, add to it the solution of mercury, also hot. Let the temperature of the mixture next be raised so as to cause effervescence, and then, withdrawing the heat, stir the mixture with a porcelain spoon until it concretes on cooling. D. Acidi Nitrici puri f^viij. f3vj., Hydrargyri 3jv., Adipis 3xv., Olei Olives fSxxxvijss. Dissolve the mercury in the acid by the aid of a gentle heat; melt the lard in the oil, with the aid of a moderate heat, in a vessel capable of holding six times the quantity, and, while the mixture is hot, add the solution of mercury, also hot, and mix them thoroughly. If the mixture do not froth up, raise the heat a little till this take place. Keep the oint- ment in earthenware or glass vessels, secluded from the light, E. UNGUENTUM HYDRARGYRI NITRATIS MlTlUS. L.E. Milder Ointment of Nitrate of Mercury. ( Unguent. Hydrargyri Nit rat is Adipis Ivij. Rub together. This ointment must be freshly prepared for use.) Prop. These two ointments are the same, except in point of strength ; they are of a greenish-golden colour j and when old, become hard and short. Oper. Stimulant, detergent. Use. The stronger ointment is used as an application to herpes, porrigo larvalis, and other cutaneous eruptions. The weaker is applied, by means of a hair-pencil, to the edges of the eyelids, in psorophthalmia, and ulcerations of the tarsi. UNGUENTUM HYDRARGYRI NITRJCO-OXlDI. L. Ung. Hydrargyri Oxidi Rubri, D. Ung. Oxidi Hydrargyri, E. Ointment of Nitric Oxide of Mercury. {Hydrargyri Nitrico-Oxidi Cerce Albce Adipis 3vj. Add the oxide, reduced to a fine powder, to the melted fat and oil, and mix. L. Hydrargyri Oxidi Rubri 3j., Ung. Cerce Albce 3vij. D. Hydrargi Oxidi Rubri gj., Adipis 3vij. E.) Oper. Stimulant, escharotic. Use. To indolent foul ulcers, especially to those remaining after the removal of the scab of rupia ; to inflammations of the tunica con- junctiva, with a thickening of the inner membrane of the palpebral ; and to specks of the cornea. E.), Potassii Iodidi 3j. (3ij. E.), Spir. Red. f3j. (o?nissi, D. E.), Adipis (Ung. Cerce Albce 3xjvss. D.) Jij. (3jv. E.) Add to the lard the iodide in fine powder, and the iodine dissolved in spirit, and rub them to- gether.) Use. As an application to scrufulous tumours and bronchocele. UNGUENTUM OPH. L. Opium Ointment. (Opii contriti 3j., Adipis 3j. Rub together.) Oper. Sedative. Use. In painful irritable ulcers. UNGUENTUM OXIDI HYDRARGYRI CINERfil. E. Ointment of Grey Oxide of Mercury. {Oxidi Hydrargyri Cinerei partem j., Adipis Suis Scrofce partes iij.) Oper. and Use. The same as of the mercurial ointment, but its efficacy is not sufficiently established. UNGUENTUM OXIDI PLUMBI ALBI. E. Ointment of White Oxide of Lead. ( Ung. Simplicis partes v., Oxidi Plumbi Albipartem j.) Oper. Cooling, desiccative. Use. Applied to excoriated surfaces and burns. UNGUENTUM OXIDI ZINCI IMPUllI. E. Ointment of Impure Oxide of Zinc. (Linimenti Simplicis partes v., Oxidi Zinci Impuri partem j.) Oper. Slightly astringent, absorbent.
