![yeai-; and I may also mention that tlie poor rate valuation in the town where the property is situated is made upon two-thirds of the gi-oss rateable value only. Twelve cottages have been supplied with water for do- mestic uses and flushing pui-poses ; twelve privies have been converted into water-closets, and all the requisite soil-pans, taps, valves, stop-cocks, bibs, and other fittings, have been fiu-nished, for the sum of 21^., or \l. 15s. per cottage. The complete and effectual drainage of the same property, including connexions with the main sewer, syphon-traps for sinks, and iron gratings for yards, has been done for 9s. 5cZ., or \l. 5s. 9cZ. per cottage. The united cost of the water supply and drainage of each cottage is, therefore, 21. Os. 9cZ. The cost of the public works of water supply and drain- age in the town from which I have selected the above examples is defrayed by a special district rate of Is. GcZ. in the pound, according to the poors rate assessment, which amounts to 34i. 2s. upon the above twelve cottages. The water itself, which is of the best quality, and un- limited in quantity, is supplied for Id. in the pound. The total expenditure is as follows :— £ s. d. To regulate the time and manner of emptying water- closets, privies, and cesspools.
