![I t and pure than either of the others. I will now answer your M vera! questions, as far as I can. The shaft is 26 feet deep ; diameter I cannot tell. Depth of bore, 180 feet; diameter of ditto I do not know, nor do I know the diameter of supply pipe. The mode of power to raise water is by pumping. The cistern will I Mil tain about 15 tons. Analyzed, as before stated. Average , ciuantity of water pumped in 24 hours, about 12 tons. Number of years in use, about 18 years. Strata, 26 feet of gravel, 50 feet of clay ; the rest, to the best of my recollection, was sand and black pebbles. James Adams, Esq., supplied me with the following particulars respecting the well in the Eoyal Clarence Victualling Yard :— Memoranda of the well sunk near the mill in the Royal Cla- rence victualling-yard, for supplying the ships' boats and the tank vessels with water, and also for feeding the boilers of the 40-horse engine that is used for grinding, pumping, &c. The diameters of the iron pipes are, respec- tively, 29 inches, 22 inches, and 17 inches. The lowest pipe is of copper, and is 10| inches in diameter. This last-mentioned pipe passes 27 feet below the iron pipes. (Iron pipes, 232 feet 6 inches ; and copper ditto, 27 feet.) • Total depth from surface - - 305 3 The well will yield 470 tons per day, and the water is consi- dered to be of good quality. The following written statement was forwarded to me by the writer, Stephen WilUngtoJi, who is one of the water carriers in Gosport:— Sir, King-street, Gosport, Feb. 12, IH52. I TRUST you will excuse the liberty I have taken in troubling you, but having a wife and seven children to support, who are entirely dependent on my labour, I am induced to write to you to show the position I am in. For the last twenty years I have supiilied the inhabitants of Gosport with spring water ; during seventeen of these I was em- ployed by Edward Paddon, Esq., but since that time I have worked on my own account. I also rent a portion of the well belonging to Mr. Biden, for which I pay him 16/. per annum, and sell, on an average, six tons per day.
