This Act, which became law on April 1st, 1945, deals, amongst its other i extensive provisions, with the provision of Medical Inspection and Treatment of i pupils in attendance at schools, colleges and other educational establishments ! maintained by the Local Authority. The general conduct of the School Medical Service is governed by the i Handicapped Pupils and Medical Service Regulations issued under the Act, and i these Regulations also deal with the several categories of handicapped pupils ! requiring special educational treatment. Broadly speaking, the new Act does not alter the structure or administration ; of the School Medical Service as existing under previous legislation, but the ] general scope of the Service is widened and the powers granted for provision of J medical treatment are greatly increased. ij As in the past medical inspection of all pupils is to take place three times during school life, but provision is also made for further medical inspections either at the direction of the Minister of Education or at the discretion of the Local Authority with the Minister’s approval. Arrangements have also to be made as i required for special examinations for the purpose of ascertaining whether a pupil | requires special educational treatment on account of disability of mind or body. | Dental Inspection is to be carried out as soon as possible after the date of admission for the first time to a maintained school and on such other occasions as the Minister directs.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30127221_0006.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
