$FRANCIS HARRY COMPTON CRICK The discovery of the structure of DNA by Crick and Watson at Cambridge in 1953 has been hailed as the outstanding event in twentieth-century biology. Watson's account of the history of that work, in his book, The Double Helix, is well known. Dr. Crick has continued to make extremely im portant contributions concerning the nature of the genetic code and the mechanism of translation of genetic information. His present interests in clude the problems of development and chromo somal structure. He is currently visiting at the Salk Institute in La Jolla. THE JEAN WEIGLE MEMORIAL FUND The Jean Weigle Memorial Fund was established in 1969 to preserve the memory of a man who was one of the Biology Division's most creative research associates. The purpose of the fund has been to bring indi viduals of outstanding talent to the Biology Divi sion, and it has been used to invite Jean Weigle Memorial Lecturers at suitable intervals. Dr. Fran cis Crick, of the Medical Research Council Labora tory for Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, is the sixth such lecturer. Contributions of over $40,000 have been made by Jean Weigle's relatives, friends, and colleagues, and are gratefully acknowledged. A new opportu nity for the fund has arisen in connection with the present crisis of funding for scientific research. This crisis has also eliminated a large fraction of the fellowships and scholarships for graduate stu dents. The Biology Division intends to use the Weigle Fund to support some of its best graduate students. It can do so for any length of time only if it receives further substantial contributions. The Division, therefore, appeals to its friends (including its own faculty), and especially to the parents of graduate students, to contribute to this vital cause. Contributions to this fund are tax deductible. Checks should be made out to the California In stitute of Technology, and sent to the Institute, attention of the Jean Weigle Memorial Fund.
