Stirling, May, 1651. £5 5s Giving permission to ‘‘ John Forbes younger of Cullodin and pro- vost of our Burgh of Inverness ’’ to ‘‘ return to his place of residence.”’ King Charles I. had been executed in 1649, whereupon his son was proclaimed King Charles II. in Edinburgh by the Royalists and crowned at Scone end of the year 1650. He attempted to recapture the throne from Cromwell, and at the date of this document was at Stirling on his disastrous march southward, where he had been accompanied by John Forbes. 480 GHARLES II (1630-1685). I page, small 4to. 24th February, 1649. £5 5s Charles I was executed on the 20th January, 1649. This order is therefore one of the earliest that his son issued. He had a few days _ before been proclaimed King at Edinburgh, and at this time was in flight from Cornwall—he is very laconic, the order reading simply, ‘“ Walker pay Armoror 600 livres. Charles R.”’ | Sir Edward Walker was the famous herald and secretary to Charles I at Newport, and a staunch adherent of his son. At the Restoration he collected and published narratives of the civil war. In 1675 he purchased Shakespeare’s house at Stratford-on-Avon (both New Place and the land adjoining Stratford which Shakespeare had purchased from the Combes). Walker’s only child Barbara, was wife of Sir John Clopton, and Sir Edward desired a residence near his daughter and her family. He died at New Place on February 19, 1676-7, and he left the Shakespearian house and estate to his eldest grandchild Edward Clopton. 481 GHRISTINA (1626-1689). Queen of Sweden. Only daughter of Gustavus Adolphus. Celebrated for her literary and scientific tastes. DOCUMENT SIGNED “* CHRISTINA.” $-page, folio. Stockholm, 13th January, 1645.
