![APPENDIX. THE CANAL BOATS ACT, 1877. (40 & 41 Vict. c. 60.) (a) An Act to 'provide for the Begistration and Becjulation of Canal Boats used as Diuellings. [14th August 1877.] 1. After the expiration of txvelve months after the com- Registration mencement of this Act, or if the regulations of the Local f^^^^'J^^^^^^^ Government Board hereinafter mentioned have not at that time come into force, then after the expiration of six months from the date at which they have come into force (b), a canal boat shall not be used as a dwelling unless it has been registered in accordance with this Act. The owner of a canal boat may register that boat with the registration authority hereinafter mentioned (c) as a dweUing for such number of persons of the specified age and sex as may be allowed under the provisions of this Act; and the boat shall be used as a dwelling only for the number of persons of the age and sex for which it is registered. If a canal boat is used as a dwelhng in contravention of this Act, the master of the boat, and also the owner of the boat, if he is in fault, shall each be Hable to a fine not exceeding twenty shilhngs for each occasion on which the boat is so used.
